| Home Theatre Receiver |
With the advent of Dolby surround
in the 1980's we progressed from the humble NICAM stereo TV set to
the world of surround sound.
Improvements in storage devices and processing speed have meant
that today with Dolby Digital 7.1 the bandwidth available can
handle 7 discrete channels of sound as well as a dedicated
subwoofer channel and higher than broadcast quality video.
The job of the processor is to take a signal from a source and
decode it from (usually one or two streams) into as many channels
as the director intended it to be experienced in.
Most modern processors are integrated with amplifiers and are
called "home theatre receivers" - as they usually have an am/fm
tuner stage integrated.
Select a processor that can accommodate your current quantity
and quality of source equipment as well as any impending technology
improvements.
A factor in selection will be the wattage of the receiver, and
this is determined by the requirement of room and thus the speaker
selection.
