| If it's square it's not going to
work... |
It is a fact that most rooms are
rectangular or square in shape. This is a huge problem for
sound reproduction in that standing waves are generated that create
nulls and peaks at the nodes for any given frequency. The
more regular the dimensions of the room (i.e. 3m x 3m x 3m stud)
the worse the problem.
The remedy is to design the room in odd dimensions with walls
not quite parallel, and this a great reason to get your home
theatre consultant engaged in your project as early on in the
design phase of the house as possible.
If the room design can't be changed or it has already been built
- there are several remedies for room nodes, slap echo and first
order reflections. Treating these is outside the scope of
this material but for further information please visit www.aa.net.nz and arrange a consultation
with a home theatre engineer.
