| Freestanding 12" Active Sub |
Since the speakers are usually
unable to carry the entire range of the program material due to
aesthetic considerations (they would be huge!) the subwoofer signal
is split out from the audio program by the processor for delivery
at line level to the subwoofer.
Subwoofers need to be placed in the room with the furniture and
linings complete before the correct location can truly be
established. A general rule of thumb is to use a minimum of
two subwoofers or preferably four. If two, these would be
placed midway along the longest walls, if four subs are used -
place them midway along each wall.
This is a guide only, as mentioned sub placement is dependant on
furnishings and room dimensions which dictate room nodes (the zero
crossing point of the simple and reflected soundwave at any given
frequency).
If you are sitting in such a node - no matter how loud you make
the sub - you will hear very little bass, move your head a meter
either side and you will discover all the missing power you have
paid for! Complete your room and then place your subs.
Your home theatre consultant will advise on the best wiring and
placement strategy to integrate with the design features of the
room.
